Greetings and salutations! We have some exciting updates to share with you regarding the Domains model, so without further ado, let’s spring (Greg’s note: it was a spring release, hardy har har) these enhancements into action!
Here’s what’s included in this round (originally anchor links):
- Domains 2.0: Self-Registration
- What Is Self-Registration?
- How Can Sub-Domains Manage Their Self-Registration Settings?
- Bug Fixes
Domains 2.0: Self-Registration
Those who use the Domains model may have noticed that sub-domains (child) are forced to inherit the self-registration settings of the root domain (parent). With updated self-registration configurations, sub-domains can now manage these settings independent from the root domain.
What Is Self-Registration?
Self-registration is when a student has the ability to sign up for a particular website and create their own profile without administrator assistance. Up until now, sub-domains inherited the root domain’s settings by default, including self-registration. It used to be that if the root domain did not have self-registration turned on then neither did the sub-domain.
With this new solution, sub-domains will no longer be affected by the root domain’s self-registration settings. If a new student jumps to the sub-domain’s URL and the self-registration setting is turned on, they will now see something similar to the below screenshot:

For a more visual representation, the Hierarchy Node Configuration will look something like this:

- Enterprise is the root domain.
- Army is a sub-domain that does not inherit certain parent settings.
- Navy is not a domain and will inherit the parent settings.
How Can Sub-Domains Manage Their Self-Registration Settings?
The first thing sub-domain admins will notice is the addition of Site Master Setup within System Tools. Previously, this was only accessible within the root domain but for this particular update an abbreviated version is being made available for sub-domain admins. To configure this tool, head on over to System Tools and enter Site Master Setup. There should only be one option available within the Site Master Setup Options list, which is Student Self-Registration Settings. Your sub-domain’s page will look something like this:

Just a reminder: The above screenshot is taken in the sub-domain, labeled Army. As you can see, the Student Self-Registration Settings are now configured independently from the root domain.
- Enable Student Self-Registration: Checking this box will create a “Register Now!” link on your login page for new students.
- Student Self-Registration Requires Approval: By checking this box, the new student’s information will need to be reviewed before registration can be complete.
- Student Self-Registration Mode: Can set default nodes or use a registration key to determine a new student’s settings.
- Default Student Node: Assigns the new student to the Student Node of your choice.
- Default Administrative Node: Assigns the new student to the Administrative Node of your choice.
- Default Permissions Group: Assigns the new student to the Permission Group of your choice.
Now when students are logging into their Army site accounts, they will see the following:

Clicking the Register Now! link will take new students to a form to fill out some basic information:

The account details that new students can enter are fully customizable via User Profile Configuration within Users & Org. Assuming your permission is enabled, you can list optional or required fields for incoming students to fill out.
